ResumoThis work is a review of recent research on the Vacuum Arc Centrifuge (VAC). The VAC is an axially configured plasma centrifuge, in which a uniform axial magnetic field is present in a cylindrical vessel. The source of the plasma is metal ablated from the cathode, which is ionized by an electrical breakdown between the cathode and anode mesh. The VAC is a typically a pulsed device, with drive currents of 1kA lasting for several milliseconds. The current in the region between cathode and anode mesh (driving region) has both an axial and radial component, and it is the interaction of this current with the external magnetic field that sets the plasma into rotation at angular frequencies between 30 to 400 krad/s. The rotating plasma column is kept in confinement from the balance of centrifugal and Lorentz forces, and the pressure gradient. Experimental evidence to date purports a non-uniformity in the region downstream of the anode mesh (rotation region). The non-uniformity has azimuthal mode structure m=1 and rotates in the same sense as the plasma, with angular frequency either comparable to or slightly above the plasma angular rotation frequency. A wave perturbation to a two species VAC plasma model is applied, and dispersion relations are generated under a range of wave and plasma conditions. It is shown that only the resistive drift mode, with eigen-modes m=1 and finite axial wavelength is unstable. The experimental device is the PCEN centrifuge at the Brazilian National Space Research Institute (INPE). A series of Langmuir probe measurements determine the wave frequency spectrum, eigen-mode number and axial wavelength, as well as phase and magnitude of the ratio of ion density to floating potential oscillations in the PCEN device, and are compared to predictions of perturbation theory. Agreement between theory and experiment is good, thereby identifying the instability as a resistive drift mode. A brief review of how a non-uniform magnetic field affects the plasma properties in the rotation region is presented, as well as summary of the evolution of the isotope enrichment in the rotation region. Finally, an outline of future experiments in the VAC is presented.
